(a) You're bored and want to be entertained.
(b) You know me, and are curious what I'm doing these days.
(c) You've mistakenly clicked the wrong link.
(d) You're actually looking for information about me.
For those of you here for reason (a) I've included a short list of links to sites that are likely to be more entertaining than mine. I'll refer anyone who arrived here for reason (c) to their browser's "back" button. Reason (b) people should email me -- if you're in the area, we'll have lunch.
That leaves the ones who actually want to know something about me. This would be much easier if I actually knew what you wanted to know, but since I don't, I'll just cover the highlights. I'm an undergraduate student in the Computer Science Department at Rose-Hulman, though I originally came to school intending to prepare for a career in Mathematics but switched majors when I accidentally developed an affinity to CS. I was having a lot more fun writing programs than writing proofs, I guess. I'm still pretty happy that we get a fair amount of math in our CS curriculum though, and I've enjoyed learning some spanish while I've been here too; I hope to one day be able to converse with that one waiter at El Camino Real.
In addition to being a student, I've served as a learning center tutor, which is probably the job that I've loved the most, spent time administering the computer science department network, and lent my voice to our college's radio station as a classical and jazz music disc jockey.
I'll be joining the work force this year; I expect it will finally be a time when I can devote myself completely to something I really find fascinating, and give me a chance to make a contribution to my field; create something useful, something novel. It'll also allow me to eat.
The down time finds me reading, mostly...I have somewhat of a literature fetish. In the past I rarely deviated from the classics, but recently I've started reading some more of the modern, 20th century stuff. I don't expect it will be a trend that continues, though. I also pretend to stay mildly active, but let's face it, it's a losing battle. Rose has two clubs of which I'm still an active member - the rock-climbing club, and the outdoor adventure club. I enjoy hitting around a tennis ball now and then (I wouldn't say I "play tennis"; that sounds too much like I know what I'm doing) and I still have my golf clubs at school, though they haven't left the corner in quite some time, and I don't know if you can count playing golf as staying active anyway. If you're curious to know what else I like, here is a short list of some of those everyday things that make me smile.
There are a few things I'd like to get out of this life: some kids, a loving wife, white picket fence...pretty much the whole shebang there. I'd like to learn how to play the violin or viola (even though I think the cello sounds prettier.) I'd like to write a book, act in a play, and have a gallery filled with my artwork. The book doesn't have to be published, and the art should probably only be shown for one evening. I'd like to be around when the first intelligent machine is created. I wouldn't mind having a part in it. And I'd like to learn French, because it sounds so beautiful spoken. (Then again maybe I don't want to learn French. I think it would take something away from the experience if I knew what people were talking about. They could be talking about their toes or something...so it's probably better that I don't learn the language after all.)
So that's me in a nutshell. I also have some pictures here because strangers are always fun to look at. If you want to know more, you'll just have to ask.
